Nate's Journo

Why journalism?

I enrolled into the journalism program at Humber College for a number of reasons, but I’m still don’t have a clear idea of what I want to do, or where I want to go once, I complete the program.

My interest for writing and storytelling started after grade 9 in high school. I transferred schools and never really cared for any class other than physical education and never put much thought into what I wanted to do after high school.

However, my grade 10 English teacher who also happened to be my teacher for the next three years until graduation, taught me that there were many different forms to teach an English class, from the typical mundane essays.

I learned that through English, grammar and sentence structure are what formulate different types of media and one’s creativity adds to that mix.

I enrolled into Humber college because I didn’t want to just make my own stories and books, but I wanted to learn about different styles of writing and have many options and pathways I can look forward too.

Journalism seemed like the best option because I wasn’t just writing stories for the sake of writing stories, instead I get to write about topics that interest me such as video games, anime, health, music, and sports, plus it helps me open up my horizon to various topics I am not familiar with.

What makes it even greater is that I get to talk to people who have the same interest as I do and learn about the things I never knew, because unlike books that spout information at you and show no emotion, these people are the books with their extensive knowledge on different topics just waiting to be explored.

I like when I get to interview a person on their love for their work and it looks like they have more than one answer for every question. For the past two years in this program I have really grown to enjoy magazine and newspaper writing.

I think if I can work for a company that either promotes video games and anime or interviews the minds behind the ideas in these two genres, that would make me happy.
